Polk County School students will be out of school on Friday, October 23, 2009! This day is a Teacher Workday. Students will return the following Monday.

Other random 10/23/2009 trivia: it is the 296th day of the year and falls during the 43rd week of the year; it is National Mole Day (no kidding), and the birthdays of Weird Al Yankovic, Johnny Carson, and Michael Crichton; for all you science geeks, the sun rises at 7:34 a.m. and sets at 6:52 p.m., giving you 11 hours and 18 minutes of daylight.

This coming Monday (September 7th) is Labor Day and all Polk County public schools are closed. Labor Day is often called the “last gasp of summer”. According to the US Department of Labor

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Despite the holiday’s origin and founders (both which are debatable), students are more than happy to miss a school day in celebration of the event (SROs also seem to feel the same). You can view future holidays on the Polk County School Board calender here.
